: for the first time, pentagon leaders said today they had supported arming the rebels in syria. defense secretary leon panetta and general martin dempsey chair of the joint chiefs said they made that recommendation to president obama. panetta told a senate hearing that, inhe endthe president decided against sending in arms. instead, the u.s. has provided only humanitarian aid to the rebels. secretary panetta also defended the military's response to the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. the assault killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. panetta testified there'd been no specific warning of an imminent attack, so u.s. forces were too far away to respond. >> the united states military, as i've said, is not and frankly should not be a 911 service capable of arriving on the scene within minutes to everpossible contingency around the world. the u.s. military has neither the resources nor the responsibility to have a firehouse next to every u.s. facility in the world. >> sreenivasan: republican senator john mccain of arizona argued the military could have deployed in t

spending cuts. if congress fails to block the march 1st cuts in the pentagon budget, the navy will ground the blue angels. that precision flying team. the blue angels perform in 30 cities each year including, of course, san francisco. while the angels are just one part of our fleet week, they are considered the biggest draw and a key reason why a million people spend that weekend in san francisco every year which, of course, leaves a big boost for the local economy. on this presidents' day, president obama is back in washington tonight after spending the weekend in florida, even golfing with tiger woods yesterday. congress is out for the entear week making the city -- take a look -- look like a ghost town. some tourists were irritated saying less than two weeks remain until the $85 billion in spending cuts kick in. >> it is quite concerning that they're not here. >> get it solved. it's keeping everybody on pins and needles. >> lawmakers are spending this weeklong recess in their own districts and when they return to washington they'll have four days to agree on an alternative plan to cut

furloughs today. the pentagon just announced a news conference at 10:00 a.m. pacific to lay out how these automatic spending cuts will affect our spending. there are about 170 federal civilian workers in california. most of them would be furloughed for up to 22 days. that's equivalent to a 20% pay cut over a six-month period. now, those furloughs would not kick in until april, even if sequestration takes effect next friday. businesses that work for the federal government would also cut back. >> that waiting and failing to spend now is what could lead to unemployment now and difficulties later. . >> reporter: we'll -- we'll take a look at what the long- term effects could be on -- on california -- next. >> thank you. >>> a group that supports same- sex marriage is launching a $is million -- is launching a $1 million campaign featuring clips of president obama, former first lady laura bush, colin powell and former vice president, dick cheney, all expressing support for same-sex marriage. the group says the goal of the tv ad is to show there is bipartisan support for same-sex marriage
